The Kettlebell Solution For Speed And Explosive Strength

The Kettlebell Solution For Speed And Explosive Strength

By Mike Mahler

We all know that kettlebells are fantastic for building muscular endurance and core strength. Moreover, I showed clearly on my last DVD, “The Kettlebell Solution For Size And Strength”, that kettlebells can be used effectively for getting bigger and stronger. My latest DVD is on how to use kettlebells to get faster and more explosive. Even if you are not an athlete, developing more speed and explosive power will enhance your goals. The more fast switch muscle fibers you can engage the stronger you will be and the more muscular endurance you will be able to tap into. Thus, my DVD will enhance any program that you are on. In this article, I am going to go over a program that is heavily inspired by Louie Simmons and the westside barbell club ( for increasing speed, strength, and size with kettlebells. Check it out:

Monday: Speed Day
Double Clean and Speed Press 8×3 (pick a weight that you can press 8-10 times and press the bells as fast as possible while remaining tight. Do a clean before each press and take one-minute breaks in between each set.
Double Kettlebell Box Squats 8×3 (pick a weight that you can 8-10 times and take one-minute breaks in between each set. Squat down to a box just below parallel, sit on the box for a second and stand up as fast as possible)
Double Kettlebell Swing 8×3 (pick a weight that you can do 8-10 times and focus on driving through as forcefully as possible. Keep the bells at no high than chest level. The focus should be on your hamstrings. One-minute breaks in between each set)

Doing the speed work first fires up your CNS and gets your fast twitch muscles engaged for the work to follow.

Double Kettlebell Bent-over Row or Weighted Pull-up 3×6 (stay one rep away from failure and take two-minute breaks)
Double Kettlebell One-legged Deadift 2×6 l,r (left and right one-minute breaks)
One-arm Windmill 2×5 l,r (left and right and one-minute breaks. Go heavy on these, but do not train to failure)
Wednesday: Medium Intensity Day
A-1: Double Floor Press 2×6 reps
A-2: Renegade Row 2×6 reps l,r

Do A-1 and A-2 in alternating fashion. In other words, do a set of A-1, wait a minute and then do a set of A-2. Keep going back and forth until you have completed all of the designated sets.

B-1: Double Front Squat 2×6 reps
B-2: Double Snatch 2×5 reps

Do B-1 and B-2 in alternating fashion. In other words, do a set of B-1, wait a minute and then do a set of B-2. Keep going back and forth until you have completed all of the designated sets.

Wrap up with

Turkish Get-up 2×5 l,r (two sets of five left and right and one-minute breaks in between each set)
Friday: Maximum Effort Size and Strength Day
A-1: Double Kettlebell Military Press 5×5 reps
A-2: Weighted Pull-up or Double Kettlebell Bent Over Row 5×5

Do A-1 and A-2 in alternating fashion. In other words, do a set of A-1, wait ninety seconds and then do a set of A-2. Keep going back and forth until you have completed all of the designated sets. The last set should be very hard on each exercise. When you can do 5×5 with an exercise, add another set.

B-1: Double Front Squat 5×5
B-2: Double Swing 5×5

Do B-1 and B-2 in alternating fashion. In other words, do a set of B-1, wait ninety seconds and then do a set of B-2. Keep going back and forth until you have completed all of the designated sets. The last set should be very hard on each exercise. When you can do 5×5 with an exercise, add another set.

Wrap up with

Double Windmill 2×5 l,r (two sets of five left and right and one-minute breaks in between each set)

Every thee weeks change the exercises on the maximum effort day to avoid burnout, boredom, and lack of progress. For example do the Sot press instead of the Double Mil Press or Double Lunges instead of Double Front Squats.

Hotel break or cottage holiday?

Article by Ron Jackson

Now is the time when people start to think about summer holidays, last minute breaks and anything to find a bit of reliable weather but should you go for a hotel break or a cottage holiday? Both can be luxurious, relaxing, exciting and as cheap or expensive as the budget calls for so what are the pros and cons of each?

Cottage holiday – you’re probably imagining these to be rural, chocolate box cottages in the middle of nowhere, suitable for romantic breaks, breaks for the older couple or for those who just can’t get enough of the great outdoors. All of these assumptions are true but they’re not the only types of cottage holidays by any means. Cottage holidays can be a great way to stay on the outskirts of a big city and enjoy both the city itself and the surrounding areas, perfect for those who like to discover new things such as nature reserves and National Trust properties but still want the urban buzz. If there are a group of you then renting a cottage can be a cheap option either for a long weekend or a whole week and as long as you remember that nothing’s provided on this sort of holiday you’ll have a great time. This is the downside of course, that there’s no onsite restaurant or reception service, you’re left to fend for yourself so don’t forget your towel and your hamper full of food!

Hotel break – the choices are almost endless when you opt for a hotel break, you can choose from UK city breaks, country breaks, breaks abroad, luxury, budget, all inclusive, bed and breakfast only, dinner included, double, single, twin, facilities, no facilities and so on, it’s a big world out there. There are advantages and disadvantages to this, the major disadvantage being that trawling through the endless options could potentially ruin the excitement of booking your holiday because it can really drag if you don’t narrow it down quickly. On the other hand, the advantage is massive, literally whatever you want, whatever you like and whatever you’re into, is available, want something? There’ll be a hotel for that. Hotels are everywhere and they’re all manned for 24 hours a day which means if you get peckish at three o’clock in the morning, you can order a cheese sandwich or if you’ve forgotten to iron your shirt then you can borrow an ironing board and an iron.Whatever you want, from luxurious hotels to UK cottage holidays, do your research and you really could be enjoying either, no matter what sort of person you are.

When looking for somewhere different to stay at there are boutique hotel Leeds and Boutique Hotel London options available for a truly unique experience.

There Are Many Ways To Choose the Best Cruise Lines

Taking vacations via cruise ships tend to become expensive that is why making the most out of the money spent for a cruise ship travel is very important. The best cruise lines are not only those with best cruise deals. In fact, the cruise liner with the least number of last minute deals will give the cruise-savvy traveler the notion that it could be the best cruise lines.

Why would that be? Last minute deals are given only within about three week or three hours before departure date or time. To ensure that the cruise ship will leave with all berths sold at the time of departure, last minute deals are offered as departure time nears. Hence, the cruise lines with the least number of last minute deals means most of their berths or cabins have been sold out and they are only looking for fillers.

For a cruise ship to be nearly sold out before departure time, it means only one thing. Most of its passengers booked early to make sure they are assured of a vacation travel with this particular cruise ship. In all probability and by the number of its patronage, it has the makings of the best cruise lines.

So here are some of the best cruise lines available out there.  This guide aims only to help you decide which best cruise lines to spend your vacation. As each person has his own opinion, some cruise lines are always better than the others. Here are some of the best cruise lines and the reason why you should consider choosing them.

Silversea Cruises
If you like small ships where you can easily get around and meet new people then, Silversea cruises can be a good choice to consider. They are more inclined to serving the elderly and well-experienced passenger. They have a wide range of activities that you can participate in from formal dinners to off-shore excursions. Their cruise is better described as a cruise for the more sophisticated class. As their service and activities are sophisticated, the food onboard is also considered to be excellent. This could be the best cruise lines for a traveler who wants less of the rowdiness and more of the serene environment. Anyone who’s looking for a cruise ship that can help relieve their stress weary-being can find their best cruise lines among the elderly and genteel folks.

Royal Caribbean Cruises
If you are taking a vacation on a relatively average budget, then the Royal Caribbean lines will prove to be a good decision. In terms of passengers, it is of an average priced cruise where people from all walks of like are more likely to be present while you are on cruise. Still it is considered as one of the best cruise lines as the food and service is good. You would not also be annoyed by a lot of children why you are on cruise as the number of children is not that big. So if you want a balance between the ratios of adults to kids on board, you can find your best cruise lines here.

Disney Cruise
If you want to take a cruise with the kids in mind then the best cruise lines are hands down to the accommodations offered by the Disney cruise line. The best part about the Disney cruise line is that they offer specific activities for specific age groups.  This way the older or the younger kid in a group will not feel out of place each time they participate in an activity.  The best part is that the price is not that high.

Carnival Cruise
This is where you want to be if you don’t want to feel that you’ve left behind the real world. People from all walks of life are here on this cruise ship. They intend to make merry with all that the cruise ship has to offer in all forms of entertainment, dining pleasure and on-shore cruises. A great majority of the ship’s spaces are dedicated for children from ages to 3 to 17 years old.

Parents can have their own rest and relaxation because kids have their own places to hang-out with trained staff to look after them. In fact, they even offer baby-sitting services after hours so parents can have their nights out. So if you’re the parent who doesn’t want to leave your kid at home during your cruise vacations, you will find this to be the best cruise lines

Best cruise lines are not only determined by the service and the food that they serve while you are on cruise but by the activities they offer to keep you or your children occupied while cruising. Their destination spans the globe to provide adventurous experiences for their passengers. Determine what you really want out of your vacation and find your best cruise lines from the ones suggested above.

How to choose a hotel room

As a write city audio tours of Florence, Paris, London and the occasional audio guide of Barcelona and guide to Venice, I spend a lot of time in hotel rooms.  I’m also very fussy about the hotel rooms I stay in.

So it follows that I know a thing or two about how to choose a hotel room.  Here are my top ten tips:

1.            Don’t necessarily take the first room you’re offered.  Hotels often try and get rid of less attractive hotel rooms – especially if they’re booked through money saving travel sites such as and

2.            Lie down on the bed to see how comfortable it is.  This is the most important thing, after all, about any hotel room.  You could also see if the room has a bath shower.  I know from writing city guides that a bath is essential after you’ve been tramping the streets for eight hours.

3.            Get a hotel room that is as high up as you can – you’ll be away from traffic noise and you’ll get better views of the city.

4.            Choose a hotel room away from the lifts to minimise the number of people who walk past your door.  Also, make sure that your hotel room is not near the maid’s closet or a service doorway.

5.            When you’re checking in ask about an upgrade.  Some hotels will give you a superior room or even a junior suite at a discount rather than leave it unused that night.  This is how Brent Hoberman says he got the idea for

6.            Hotel chains might be seen as soulless and bland but staying with same chain every trip such as Hilton means consistent quality.  More importantly, they also allow you to collect loyalty points and you’ll be more likely to get upgrades.

7.            Avoid the mini-bar – unless, that is you like giving your money away.  Buy your drinks and snacks outside the hotel.  You can still use the fridge to keep them cold.

8.            Location, location, location is the mantra of the property business and it’s a similar situation with hotel rooms.  Even the independent booking sites can be rather vague or excessively optimistic about how near to the city centre and its main attractions your hotel is.  Check on a map – and look at the scale – before you book.

9.            Check to see if your room has facilities such as an iron.  If not, then ask to borrow one when you first get in.  Don’t be tempted to send your clothes out for ironing as this can be ridiculously expensive.

10.            Seriously – when you finally get to your room make sure you know where the fire exit is and walk along to it just to make sure.

I write city walking tours that you can download on to a mp3player or iPod. I tell you where to walk and tell you about what you’re seeing as you see it.

Amelia Earhart: The Unsolved Mystery

Born 24 July 1897 and went missing 2 July 1937, Amelia Earhart touched the hearts of people during her time. She represented the woman side of aviation receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross for being the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Braving against men in the field of aviation three decades after the invention of the airplane, she established records and wrote best selling books about flying which later led to the establishment of the first women organization in aviation, The Ninety-Nines.

Introduction to Flying

Amelia’s interest in flying was sparked by her visit to an air fair with a friend in relation to the Canadian National Exposition in Toronto. A flying exhibition performed by a World war I ace was the highlight of the event which left an impression to Amelia. When airborne, the pilot apparently noticed Earhart and her friend isolated from the crowd initiating a dive that supposedly should set them scampering to safety but the former stood her ground overcoming fear and surprise. The downwash of the airplane closing by before it pulled up to altitude left something to the adventurous spirit a woman that was set to make a mark in history. The next phase of Amelia’s initiation to flying occurred in Long Beach, the 28th of December 1920. She visited an airfield with her father and met Frank Hawks who gave her a ride that furthered her love for flight. Her father paid for the 10-minute flight experience that forever changed her life. By then on, Amelia gained such enthusiasm that fuelled her desire and determination to learn to fly.

Learning to Fly and Owning a Plane

The next moments proved challenging to Amelia as she took various jobs to nurture her interest in learning to fly. She worked as a photographer, stenographer at a telephone company and truck driver allowing her to save a considerable amount of ,000 to pay for flight instruction. With an additional ,000 given by her mother, she was ready and approached the services of Anita Snook, a pioneer aviator who taught her the basics. The rudiments of flight training proved no match to Amelia‘s commitment to pursue her dreams as she willingly submitted herself to her flight instructor. A surplus Curtiss JN-4”Canuck” was used for her flight lessons. Six months after, buying a second-hand Kinner Airster biplane seemed like the most right thing to do for Amelia. It was with such plane that she established the first altitude record for women at 14,000 ft (4,300 m) on 22 October 1922. Fate just followed its path as she became the 16th woman to gain her pilot’s license (No. 6017) on 15 May 1923 issued by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI).

Record Flights

On 17 June 1928, Amelia became a passenger on a trans-atlantic flight from Trepassey Harbor, Newfoundland to Burry Port, Wales, United Kingdom. Despite that she was literally a passenger with pilot Wilmer Stultz and co-pilot/mechanic Louis Gordon taking charge of flying, her woman presence gained a rousing welcome which gained even more recognition when the party returned to the United States. For the succeeding years her life was devoted to further her flight experience where she established some records. She made trips in August 1928 and flown solo across the North American continent and back, participated in Women’s Air Derby and set a world altitude record in an autogyro in 1931. She was present at the instrumental formation of The Ninety Nines, the International Organization of Women pilot’s on 2 November 1929 and became its first president in 1930. Amelia Earhart’s private life ended with her marriage to George Putnam in 7 February 1931 but her flying activities never ended as her husband had been supportive in all her endeavours. On 20 May 1932, Amelia took off from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland aiming for Paris to imitate Lindberg’s historic flight but strong winds and mechanical problems took her to Derry, Northern Ireland after 14 hours and 56 minutes. She received the Distinguished Flying Cross from the Congress and other awards for flying solo non-stop across the Atlantic.

The Flight Around the World and The Mysterious Disappearance

On 2 July 1937 (midnight GMT), the heavily loaded Lockheed Electra 10E took off from Lae, New Guinea for the completion of the last leg of Amelia Earhart’s circumnavigational flight of the globe with navigator Fred Noonan. They have virtually completed the 22,000 mile journey flying from Miami on the 1st of June with numerous stops en route to South America, Africa, Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia then at Lae, New Guinea where they were left with the remaining 7,000 miles all over the Pacific. Their last known communication was made at 8:43 a.m. near Howland Island received by the US Coast guard cutter Itasca. The transmission confirmed low on fuel and that despite a morse code reply from the cutter, she was unable to determine their direction. After an hour of last message the USCG cutter Itasca conducted search of the missing plane based on assumptions from the radio transmissions which was unsuccessful. The search had advanced on for years but despite circumstantial evidence, the mystery of the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan endures to the present. Amelia Earhart was legally declared dead 5 January 1939.
